A Day Well-Spent in Downtown Los Angeles

June 27. 2017

Downtown L.A has changed so much over the years. It’s ever gentrifying- it now has a huge Wholefoods on 8th and Grand.

Spending late evenings hovering around and examining each aisle to scout for what the wonder-mart (that Amazon has recently acquired) has to offer always brings so much pleasure. Sea urchin from Santa Barbara, Lavender Gelato, Cool new brands of yoga tops and pants… Yep, they’ve got it!

Since the times i was at SC and lived at the Medici, DTLA has increasingly evolved. Don’t get me wrong , it was interesting back then as well, i loved it for the warehouse parties somewhere nestled beyond the now popular Arts District where i listened to Crystal Castles live( Oh yeah, that was a fab set) and late night wine on the roof top of the Standard Hotel. All of it was so quaint and less busy. Right now, though, there is so much more DTLA has to offer. Wine bars, great restaurants, museums and boutiques!

A few of my favorites are strolling around the Arts District- to catch sight of the amazing street art! Checking out the new Hauser Wirth & Schimmel Gallery is something on top of my list. My favorite store is Alchemy Works where they stock the amazing Maryam Nassir Zadeh shoes. <3 If you’re up for some sweet treats, Salt & Straw has the best ice cream and most creative flavours.

In Downtown itself, First having lunch at the Grand Central Market is not to be missed.

My Favorites in the market:

1) The authentic carnitas tacos at Las Morelianas. Few things can make me this happy and satisfied. Wash it down with some Modelo

2) Fresh Oysters at The Oyster Gourmet. Local oysters from all around the nation.

3)  Bar Maruno. Love their beverage list, and charred veggies in a casual counter setting. Almost everything on the menu is delicious

4) Last but not least. G &B Coffee. Amazing amazing amazing. 360 degree bar. Good views all around of hip downtowners.

A little bit of shopping didn’t hurt anyone. And i meant A little. 🙂 I love walking on Broadway, where there’s the cool ACNE STUDIOS boutique at the historical Eastern Columbia Building( Yes, that’s where Johnny Depp has his huge loft) , and further down you can rummage through the giant Urban Outfitters. You’ll also find the ever-cool Aesop store and other interesting boutiques and street art all around this area.

Checking out the more huge monuments ain’t something to be shy about, Frank Ghery’s Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Broad are amongst my favorite places to visit! The architecture of both of these places are something that will rock your world. The Broad has a wonderful contemporary art collection that is to-die-for.

Later, getting dinner at Everson Royce Bar, everything on the menu is fabulous! And then head down to Mignon to have some wine. ( Mignon is cute in french, and indeed, this place is super cute!) Perhaps, catching a night cap cocktail, at the rooftop of The Ace Hotel could be a fun way to end a perfect day. As for me, i would retreat to the roof top of the apartment building which i stayed at, and catch that gorgeous downtown night view.
